How to Cook Eggs, 7 Everyday Methods (Soft Boiled to French Omelet)

Eggs are simple, but they can be cooked in many beautiful ways. This guide is written for UAE families who want consistent results in a busy routine. Use fresh eggs, gentle heat, and a few reliable timings.

Quick notes before you start

  • Fresh eggs matter: better whites, better shape, better texture.
  • Gentle heat wins: most egg problems come from high heat.
  • Timings are a guide: adjust slightly based on egg size and pan type.

1) Soft Boiled Eggs

Saucepan · Water · Eggs

Soft boiled eggs are warm and comforting. The yolk stays creamy inside the shell.

  1. Place cold eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil on medium heat.
  3. When boiling starts, cook for about 6 and a half minutes.
  4. Move eggs into cold water for 2 minutes, then peel and enjoy.

Tip: colder eggs + gentle boil = less cracking and cleaner peel later.

2) Scrambled Eggs

Skillet · Butter · Eggs

Slow cooking gives soft and creamy scrambled eggs. Most dryness happens because of high heat.

  1. Use low heat. Scrambled eggs prefer gentle cooking.
  2. Add about half a tablespoon of butter to the skillet for 4 eggs.
  3. Whisk eggs in a bowl until yolks and whites mix well.
  4. Pour into warm skillet and stir slowly until just set and still soft.

Tip: stop cooking slightly early, heat keeps working for 30 to 60 seconds.

3) Over Easy Eggs

Skillet · Butter · Eggs

Over easy eggs have cooked whites and a runny yolk. The secret is low heat and patience.

  1. Melt a little butter in a non-stick skillet on low heat.
  2. Crack egg into skillet and cook until whites turn opaque.
  3. Gently flip and cook briefly until the top sets but yolk stays soft.

Tip: if you want “over medium”, just add 20 to 40 seconds more after flipping.

4) Poached Eggs

Saucepan · Water · Vinegar · Salt · Egg

Poached eggs look special but are easy with a little care. Use fresher eggs for a neater shape.

  1. Fill saucepan with water 5 to 6 cm deep. Add 1 tbsp white vinegar and a pinch of salt.
  2. Heat until you see small bubbles (not strong boiling).
  3. Crack egg into a small bowl, then gently slide into water.
  4. Cook about 3 minutes until white sets and yolk stays soft.

Tip: swirl the water gently before sliding the egg in (optional, helps shape).

5) Crispy Fried Eggs

Skillet · Butter · Eggs

Crispy fried eggs have golden edges and rich flavour. Balance heat so whites crisp without burning.

  1. Warm a little butter in a skillet on medium heat.
  2. Crack egg into skillet. When edges start to sizzle, reduce heat to low.
  3. Cook until yolk reaches the firmness you like and edges turn golden.

Tip: a small spoon of butter basted over the white helps set the top nicely.

6) Fancy French Omelet

Skillet · Butter · Eggs · Salt

This omelet is soft inside and smooth outside. It feels like a restaurant breakfast at home.

  1. Whisk eggs until the mixture looks smooth and even.
  2. Heat non-stick skillet on medium-low and add butter (no strong sizzling).
  3. Pour eggs and stir gently and continuously with a spatula.
  4. When eggs start to set but remain soft, stop stirring and rest 1 minute off heat.
  5. Tilt pan and roll omelet into a long shape. Slide onto plate and lightly salt.

Tip: the pan must be non-stick and heat must be gentle for a clean, smooth finish.

7) Hard Boiled Eggs

Saucepan · Water · Eggs

Hard boiled eggs are perfect for salads, sandwiches, and lunch boxes.

  1. Place eggs in saucepan in a single layer and cover with cold water.
  2. Bring to a full boil on medium heat.
  3. Once boiling, cook for about 10 minutes.
  4. Move eggs into cold water, cool, then peel and serve or store in the fridge.
